Frugal Friday: Buy Summer Baselayers on the Cheap
Guys, I have a strong love for sweet-ass technical clothes. But here's the thing, there's no reason that a shirt made from a synthetic fiber without any special treatment (like water or wind-proofing) should be expensive! Really, there isn't. Pretty much all polyester/rayon/spandex type materials are substantially the same.
As such, there just isn't a reason to spend $40 on a Patagonia polyester baselayer when you can spend $12.00 on basically the same shirt on Amazon. (OK there are reasons like environmental responsibility and such if you think Patagonia has some super clean way of sourcing it's polyester and other social justice issues- so if that's driving your more expensive purchase, hats off please continue. To the rest of you BACK AWAY from the $60 option from Arcteryx!)
Now, I know Amazon clothes can be terrible. Lucky for you I have ordered quite a few of the baselayer options from the ole A and have found one that I like BETTER than the Patagonia Capilene shirt I had.
Here is the women's option that I have. I have purchased both the small and medium and prefer the looser fit of the medium.
And here is the men's option
They stock different colors at different times and sometimes the links change. So if the link above doesn't work search the keywords in the photo and it will come up. These say they are for warmth but I love to wear them in the summer for sun protection (a light color) or when doing an activity that will have varied temperatures. This layer is thin so it works great under other layers during cold mornings when you know you will end up shedding them later in the day.
