Frugal Friday: Give yourself a raise with a side hustle
The other week the powers that be sent me and my coworkers an email announcing an across the board cost of living pay increase. Oh happy day! A 3.2% increase - very well received by my dollar-loving-self. Because I work for the state, salary increases are few and far between and you can't really negotiate for a raise like you can in a traditional job because your salary is determined by a statutory pay ladder. Whomp whomp.
So I was stoked about this increase! This week my boss's boss (so my superboss?) came to all of our offices and handed us a folder piece of paper detailing the raise. I will be earning $212 more each month. Now, don't get me wrong, I am stoked about $212/month (2,544/year), but this is before taxes, so it will be much less than that that actually ends up in my pocket, probably about $150/month and that amount isn't exactly life changing. While on this roller coaster of emotional math, I realized that I had already given myself this raise by taking up a simple side hustle. I started walking dogs on the Wag! app about 6 months ago and absolutely love it! I walk the same dog twice a week over lunch and pick up other random walks here and there. I earn at least $40 a week doing this, which is $160 per month. I also did my first pet sitting the other weekend (I have allergies so have to be selective on which doggos I can take) and earned an easy $90! I had no idea that I had essentially given my self a 3.2% after tax raise by getting outside and playing with a pup a couple times a week but I think it's pretty amazing!
It may not seem like much when you add some side hustle money to your income, but it really does add up. Look into walking dogs, delivering food on your bike, becoming a task rabbit, etc! You might just give yourself a nice state mandated cost of living raise. If anyone wants to employ the good people of Wag! and get your pup walked, you can get $50 of walks for free if you sign up with my code: ANNIE39266
